Hey everyone! One of my favorite, easy to prep dinners is baked potatoes with all the fixins! There are 3 methods I’ve tried when it comes to “baking” potatoes: oven, microwave, and crockpot (slow cooker). All 3 methods have their pros and cons, and at the end of the post, you’ll learn what I think the best/preferred method is!
- Oven: This is the traditional way to bake potatoes. You heat the oven to anywhere between 300-400 degrees (may be outside of that range depending on your recipe) and bake them for approximately an hour (give or take, again depending on your recipe). Pros: traditional methods are usually the best according to most people. Cons: your whole house will heat up because of the oven, it’s not a quick method, you have to turn them over to ensure even baking.
- Microwave: This is the quickest and easiest way to bake potatoes that I’ve found. Wash and pierce your potatoes with a fork, place on one side and microwave on high for 5 minutes. Flip over and repeat. 5 minutes on each side works best for medium-sized potatoes. Increase or decrease the time depending on the size of the potato. Pros: a quick cooking method that doesn’t require the use of a “complex” kitchen appliance (like an oven or crockpot). Cons: have to sit by the microwave (can’t just leave them to bake).
- Crockpot (slow cooker): I found a recipe for this method from Pinterest (link): https://www.wellplated.com/crock-pot-baked-potatoes/ Pros: once prepped, can leave to cook (no turn over required), doesn’t heat the entire house like an oven. Cons: not a quick method (4-5 hours on high, 6-8 on low), requires foil
All of these methods work for baking potatoes, but my personal favorite is the microwave! It’s the quickest and easiest way, and while you have to stay in the kitchen to press the microwave buttons and flip them over, you can prepare your toppings for your baked potato! I also found that microwaving leads to the softest baked potato.
I hope you enjoyed this post and eat a baked potato on your happy and healthy adventure! 🙂 ❤
